Mobile Harbor Crane for Chile

Iquique Terminal Internacional S.A. (ITI) in Chile ordered a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 – the largest mobile harbor crane in the Konecranes portfolio – to handle container operations for super-post Panamax vessels. The deal was signed in Q3 2024, and the crane is now en route from Europe to be delivered in April 2025.

Super-post Panamax vessels are among the largest container ships in the world, accommodating container stacks up to nine levels high and 22 wide. Loading and unloading containers requires cranes with extended height and reach capabilities. Iquique Terminal Internacional – a subsidiary of maritime-logistics giant SAAM Terminals – chose to meet its super-post Panamax needs with a customized Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 Mobile Harbor Crane.

The crane’s large working radius allows it to handle fully laden containers in the 22nd row, while a special 10-meter tower extension raises the boom pivot point to reach nine-high container stacks. At a height of 43 meters, the tower cab provides operators with an unimpeded view of the working area, enhancing precision and safety. To access the tower cab, ITI has chosen an elevator solution with space for three people.

“ITI plays a critical role in connecting Chile with the world. This Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbor crane will be an excellent addition to our existing Konecranes fleet. We are very happy with the technology and look forward to boosting our operational capabilities so we can effectively serve super-post Panamax vessels,” says Rodrigo Pommiez Aravena, General Manager of Iquique Terminal Internacional S.A.

The Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 is the largest mobile harbor crane in the Konecranes portfolio.

The Generation 6 crane will be delivered with two telescopic twin-lift spreaders. It also comes with the ability to control rotating spreaders, as well as motor grabs for bulk handling. Relevant crane and operational data insights are provided by the Konecranes TRUCONNECT Expert Module. This data is visualized on the YourKonecranes web portal, where ITI can monitor the crane performance and plan maintenance work.

“ITI saw our ESP.10 cranes in action at Super Terminais in Manaus, Brazil. They were very impressed with the performance and subsequently placed this order. It’s rewarding and encouraging for us to enlarge our footprint in Chile with our largest container-handling crane which will be at the same time also the largest mobile harbor crane in Chile,” says Alfredo Canibano Ramos, Regional Sales Manager at Konecranes.

A strong focus on customers and commitment to business growth and continuous improvement make Konecranes a material handling industry leader. This is underpinned by investments in digitalization and technology, plus our work to make material flows more efficient with solutions that decarbonize the economy and advance circularity and safety.
