UniCarriers Prepares for OSHA Safe + Sound Week 2019
UniCarriers Americas Corporation (UCA) will participate in the annual OSHA Safe + Sound Week with planned activities to promote workplace safety. This year the event takes place 12-18 August.
OSHA Safe + Sound Week is a nationwide event that raises awareness of the value of management leadership, worker participation and hazard identification and elimination in safety programs.
During Safe + Sound Week, UCA is hosting activities, that not only demonstrate the support of safety in the workplace, but also encourage employees to practice good safety habits. In 2018, UCA recommitted to 5S3T, improving housekeeping, cleanliness and overall organization and appearance of the work environment. The 5S3T workplace organization system is derived from five Japanese terms starting with the letter “S” and three Japanese terms starting with the letter “T” that allows for improved efficiency, effectiveness and safety.
“We continually focus on safety each and every day. Additionally, we add specific events like this to our standard work in order to increase overall company awareness,” said Ed Johannesen, Director of Manufacturing Engineering and Facilities for UniCarriers Americas Corporation. “OSHA Safe and Sound Week allows us to celebrate our employees’ efforts, but it also gives us the opportunity to reinforce the importance of safety across the company. Essentially, this week gives us a time we can all come together with a common purpose of improving our workplace habits for everyone around us and gets us closer to our goal in reaching a zero-injury culture.”
Employees’ recent 5S3T demonstrated performance will be evaluated, and raffle tickets will be given to employees based on criteria including most improved and best scores overall. Employees will also receive one raffle entry for each behavior-based safety (BBS) observation that has been submitted for fiscal year 2019. In addition to the 5S3T audit and BBS rewards, and in an effort to further engage employees, members of the management team will reward employees throughout the week with raffle entries.
A UCA security officer, whose experience includes 17 years serving as Sheriff of Johnson County, Missouri, and who is a retired fire captain, will speak to employees on personal safety. And to wrap up the week’s events, UCA will host a company-wide party and raffle drawing, bringing an ice cream truck onsite, with prizes ranging from gift cards to local restaurants to a pair of Chicago professional sports league tickets.
